Soroprenuer Spotlight: Kathy Carter
KP Carter, also known as The Literacy Whisperer, is the children’s book creator of Summertime with Lizzie B. Hayes and Lizzie B. Hayes and the Great Camp Caper. For 35 years, she served hundreds of students, in various capacities including: classroom teacher, reading specialist, and adjunct professor. Before retiring, she spent the final 8 years of her career as the Director of Language Arts and Testing in a K-12 public school district with a student population of approximately 4,000. she was responsible for a staff of 200, including teachers. In her own words, KP says " I knew very early in my life that I enjoyed sharing the joy of reading. From as far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher. "
She is the owner of KP Carter Writes LLC. As an author of middle grade books, Kathy explains that writing has been a part of her life, since she was a little girl. However, she became serious about publishing her work, when her adult sons were little boys. "There was a dearth of meaningful stories featuring children of color and in the words of the great Toni Morrison, “If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it.” Currently, she is writing the third book in the Lizzie B. Hayes series.
Based on decades of experience with hundreds of parents, Kathy Carter developed a program to help them strengthen literacy outside of the classroom. Her "10 Steps to Reading Success for Progressive Parents Promoting Literacy" workshops answers the question from parents, “What can I do at home?” Other services include individual tutoring for students ages 8-14. As a member of Rho Gamma Omega, Kathy Carter has served numerous positions and is currently Co-Chairman of The Arts! initiative.
